Sunderland’s elderly may have to pay up to four times as much for social care

Elderly people in Sunderland may have to pay more towards their social care because of government changes nationally.

Currently the amount people pay towards care services, such as home help, is capped at £108.70 per week. However, under proposed new arrangements people would be individually assessed as to what they can afford to pay. Some people could end up paying up to £407 towards their “personal budget”, which is equivalent to the current maximum cost of a residential care placement per week. Those in permanent residential care won’t be affected.

A public consultation has now been launched among 3,000 people who use Sunderland Council’s adult social care services, such as home care and day care until December 19.
